When people talk about Soviet Jewry, if they're old enough to remember anything about that struggle, they remember the student-led protests to free refuseniks like Anatoly (now Natan) Sharansky; those activists led rallies that shaped an entire movement and resulted in the rescue of many Russian Jews.
But where are those Russian Jews and their families now? Tal Frankfurt (ROI 2007, see photo at left) sent around a pre-Chanukah appeal asking for our help in continuing assistance to the Russian emigres who came here 40 years ago. These points come from the slide presentation he distributed. (I've reordered them slightly, but haven't changed the content.)
40 years ago you helped free their parents.
You helped them to get to Israel.
Where are they today?
Over the last decade, approximately 241,000 immigrant teens and young adults from the Former Soviet Union (FSU) made Aliya.
High school drop-out rate among immigrant teens is 25% while their native Israeli counterpart is only 10%.
About 77% of Israeli minors with criminal records are from the FSU.
They still need your help!
Today 1+1 Association of Immigrant Youth is devoting its efforts to helping them build their lives in Israel. Over the last decade 1+1 Association of Immigrant Youth (a non-profit Israeli organization) has been supporting teens and young adults from the FSU through its nationwide programming and advocacy efforts.
We have impacted the lives of 5,000 Russian-speaking Israelis, decreasing high school drop-out rates among them, while strengthening their sense of belonging to the state of Israel.
